Idea

A Notes App: plain text notes on the SD card, created, edited and deleted on the device.

Why

A pocket computer with a keyboard should take notes. Notes was planned for M3 (Q30) and moved out when M3 became the radio only (M3, Q89).

What's decided already (Q30)

  • Plain .txt files in /notes on the SD card. Create, edit, delete.
  • A simple line editor, no rich text.
  • Notes are never offered by Storage Clean-up (CONTEXT.md, already enforced in lib/storage_model).

What's known

  • LineEditor exists (lib/ui), with the Compose Key for accents. A multi-line editor needs cursor movement across lines, scrolling, and insert/delete of lines.
  • Big notes should be read from the card as you scroll, like Gemini pages (Q88), or capped in size.
  • Saving goes through StorageService's task; save on leaving, and maybe every few seconds while editing.
  • Typing must never be lost: write to a temporary file, then rename over the note.

Questions for the design round

  1. A list of notes sorted by date or name? Search?
  2. Autosave, or explicit save with a "discard changes?" prompt?
  3. Size limit, or windowed editing for big files?
  4. File names: typed, or taken from the first line?
  5. Share with the file manager (#3): does Files open .txt in Notes?

Shipped in v0.10.0 (merge 9f65c75). What was built and the checks on the device: docs/milestones/F1.md. Left out, each with its own issue: #47 (files of any size, must come in a later release), #48, #49, #50.
